Deacon Michael was born in Washington, DC and is a life-long resident of Maryland. Having a father that was in law enforcement and coming from a family with a strong military tradition, both were very important factors in the deacon’s moral formation. Having parents that were regular church attenders also made sure of that formation. Deacon Michael is a veteran of the USAF.

Deacon Michael’s path to the Orthodox Church passed through Roman Catholicism, then through a stint of atheism, then finally arriving at the Orthodox Church in 1991. He was finally received into the OCA at St. Nicholas’ Cathedral on Great and Holy Saturday 1993 by then Metropolitan Theodosius. Deacon Michael remained in the cathedral community until 2011 when he joined that of St. Matthew’s in Columbia, Maryland.

Later, in 1996 Deacon Michael was accepted to both St. Vladimir’s and St. Tikhon’s and chose to attend St. Tikhon’s. There, he graduated in 1999 with a Master of Divinity with Honors. From 2001 to 2002 Deacon Michael pursued a Master of Theology at Hellenic College/ Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Mass, ABD.

After a long stint in the Subdiaconate, Deacon Michael was ordained to the Holy Diaconate at St. Matthew’s on February 5th 2023 by Metropolitan Tikhon on the Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee.

Deacon Michael’s undergraduate degree was in Mathematics, and he enjoys studying and teaching it and is working on his MAT in that area. Other academic interests include the sciences – particularly physics and the plant sciences. For him, all these studies lead to wonder.

Our Beloved Protodeacon Sergius fell asleep in the Lord on March 16th, 2022. Highlights of his funeral are here.

Deacon John had Protodeacon Sergius's cane placed in a memory box.  On July 10th, after liturgy, Fr. C. showed the parish the framed cane.  The cane will remain in the altar-the place most loved by PdnS and a reminder of PdnS to all serving at the altar.  Thank you Dcn. John for coordinating this heartfelt recognition project.
